Heart failure in dogs

Chronic congestive heart failure occurs when the heart does not pump enough hlood to meet the normal body needs. Pets with congestive heart failure tire easily, are short of breath, and may cough frequently. They may lose weight even though the abdomen enlarges with fluid.

There are many different causes of heart failure in dogs. These include diseases of the heart valves, heartworm infection, heart defects from birth and heart muscle disease. Though congestive heart failure cannot be cured, many patients can live a comfortable life with proper medical treatment. Radiographs (X-Rays), ECG's, ultrasound and other tests are often needed to diagnose the condition, to determine the best treatment and to monitor the progress.

Heart failure is a progressive condition so your pet will need regular reassesment so we can adjust the medications and doses. Remember we are here to help you deal with the problem as well as to ensure your pet has the best quality of life possible.
