Gastroenteritis

Stomach upsets are very common in dogs especially. This is largely due to the canine habit of eat first, think later!! The signs of a gastric upset are vomiting or abdominal pain or diarrhoea or a combination.

There are a few basic rules for dealing with gastroenteritis in dogs

  1. It is usually important to give the system a complete rest by witholding food for at least 24 hours.
  2. Water is important to maintain hydration but it is best to give small amounts frequently.
  3. When you start feeding again give only very small amounts of a mixture of boiled chicken and rice. This 'bland' diet should be continued for 34 days before going back to your pets usual diet.
  4. Different medications are required in different cases, please give all the medications as directed

If your pet is not improving rapidly over the next 24-48 hours please call us, remember we are here to help keep your pets healthy and happy.
